Can HIV be cured?
People ask this hopefully, and the honest answer is more interesting than a flat no.
There is no cure, and treatment is not one
Treatment holds the virus down so far that a test cannot find it and it cannot be passed on. It does not remove it. HIV hides in cells in a resting state that the medication cannot reach, which is why stopping treatment lets it return.
That is the difference between control and cure, and it is worth understanding, because plenty of things on the internet blur it deliberately.
The people who have been cured
A very small number of people have cleared HIV, and every one of them had a stem cell transplant to treat a life-threatening cancer, from a donor with a rare genetic resistance to the virus.
It is a brutal procedure with a real chance of dying from it. Nobody would do it for HIV alone, and it cannot be scaled. What those cases did was prove that a cure is possible at all, which is why the research took off afterwards.
What the research is actually doing
Broadly: trying to flush the virus out of the cells it hides in, to train the immune system to control it without medication, or to edit those cells directly. Some trials have kept people off treatment for months or years.
It is genuine and it is moving. It is also not close enough to plan your life around, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
Reading the headlines
A headline saying cured usually means one person, in a trial, after a transplant. A headline saying breakthrough often means a result in a laboratory, or in a handful of people.
i-Base publish a guide to cure research written for patients rather than for journalists, which is the best place to check something that sounds too good.
Where this comes from
Talkpositive is peer support, not a medical service. Anything about your own treatment belongs with your clinic, and they will not mind you asking.
If you would rather ask someone who has been through it
Talkpositive is a free, private community for people living with HIV. No real name needed, nothing public, nothing in search engines. Small rooms by what you are going through, and quiet one-to-one conversations that open only when both people have said hello.
