How long can you live with HIV?
This is the first thing most people type, usually before they have told anybody. The short answer is that treatment changed it completely, and the longer answer is worth two minutes.
The short answer
Somebody diagnosed today, who starts treatment and keeps taking it, can expect to live about as long as anyone else. The NHS puts it as a near-normal life expectancy. Not a shortened life with a number attached to it. A normal one.
That is a change within living memory, and it is why so much of what you will read online is frightening and out of date. Anything written before the mid-1990s is describing a different illness.
What it actually depends on
Taking the treatment. That is most of it. The virus is controlled for as long as the medication is in you, and it comes back if it is not.
How early you were diagnosed. Someone found early, before the immune system has taken much damage, does better than someone found years in with a very low CD4 count. Even then, the immune system recovers a great deal once treatment starts.
The ordinary things that affect everybody: smoking, blood pressure, weight, alcohol. These matter more to your long-term health now than HIV does, which is a strange sentence to read in the first week and a true one.
What about my own numbers?
A frightening CD4 count at diagnosis is a starting point, not a prediction. It usually climbs for years once treatment begins.
Nobody can give you a personal figure from a blood test, and anyone offering one online is guessing. Your clinic can tell you how your own results are moving, which is the only version of this question that has a real answer.
Where this comes from
Talkpositive is peer support, not a medical service. Anything about your own treatment belongs with your clinic, and they will not mind you asking.
If you would rather ask someone who has been through it
Talkpositive is a free, private community for people living with HIV. No real name needed, nothing public, nothing in search engines. Small rooms by what you are going through, and quiet one-to-one conversations that open only when both people have said hello.
